Freedom of the Seas - The largest cruise ship

Freedom of the Seas is the largest luxury cruise ship in the world, owned by Royal Caribbean.
This cruise ship weighs 160,000 tons, it is 1,112 feet long, 184 feet wide and it has 15 passenger decks holding 3,634 guests double-occupancy. Freedom of the Seas towers 208 feet tall, approximately the same height as two of the Statue of Liberty, placed head to toe.

A brand new feature is the H2O Zone, or the “spray ground” which has colorful fiberglass sculptures shooting jets of water, geysers shooting from the ground and water cannons. There’s even a lazy river and waterfall inside! At night, this area, with the integration of an incredible lighting system, will be transformed into a sculpture garden. Royal Caribbean says, “there’s nothing like the H2O Zone on any other cruise ship today.”

Another first-ever feature is a dedicated sports pool located in the main pool area. One of the two pools of the Freedom of the Seas is used almost exclusively for athletic pool games, ranging from basketball and volleyball to synchronized swimming. Other times, it will have designated lanes for lap swimming. The second pool is just for relaxing. At night, passengers can see this area transformed into an open-air nightclub with a large dance floor between the two pools.

Located at the heart of this largest cruise ship, the Royal Promenade is a 445-foot-long shopping, dining and entertainment boulevard that spans the length of an entire football field. At night, the Promenade hosts street parades, put on by select staff, commencing from a revolutionary new descending bridge amidst a fanfare of music, lasers and lights. Guests can also enjoy relaxed reading at the 3,600-volume Book Nook.
Guests can find their 15 seconds of fame at the On Air Club, Freedom of the Seas’ karaoke venue with state-of-the-art theatrical lighting, video cameras, flat screen TVs and even a "green screen" for aspiring music stars to record their own music video.

For professional entertainment, the Art Deco-style Arcadia Theater (1,350 guests) features three shows: Marquee, a medley of performances, the musical Now You See It! magic show, and Once Upon a Time, a narrative piece combining the Brothers Grimm’s fairy tales.
For now, Freedom of the Seas is the largest cruise ship in the world, but how long will this title last? Well, time will tell :)

After you completed your study in Hotel School (minimum D1) and then had a hotel job experience for at least 6 months, it’s the time for you now to polish your English. But if you feel that you have already had a good proficiency of English, you can go to some of cruise line agencies, and try to apply.
Here are some tips on how to polish your English:
- Speak English everyday. Try to speak English, with your brother/sister, father/mother or your friends. Tell them that you need a partner to practice. And if they speak English too or they still learn, they will be glad to practice with you.
- Repeat the most difficult part. When you find the most difficult part of learning English, either grammar, pronunciation, etc, try to repeat that part many times, give special attention until you feel the fluency.
- Practice describing thing in English: The most effective test of one’s English proficiency is how someone describes or explains a thing or an object. For example, if you see a picture of Borobudur temple, can you explain to someone else, what kind of building, when the temple built, where is the temple located, etc.
This kind of test is also one of some English tests you will find when you apply a job to cruise line ship.
- Learn guest’s complains.
For those who had experiences in hotel, knew exactly what kind of complains that usually happened from guest, and knew how to solve it. But that will be a very good lesson if you transfer those complains into English.
- Don’t get bored to keep practicing English. Manage your emotion in learning English. Aim that you have to speak English. Reach your goal that before making a job application to cruise line ship, that will bring you into English Interview, you have to be able to speak. You have to pass the test.

Alaska terletak di antara negara Canada dan Rusia. Dulunya, Alaska adalah milik Rusia, dan kemudian di beli oleh Amerika.
Pemandangan alam yang di miliki Alaska yang sangat menakjubkan adalah Glacier Bay, yang bila di lihat dari atas seperti aliran sungai es raksasa, dan di beberapa tempatnya tampak telah hitam membatu.
Setiap harinya Alaska dikunjungi oleh ribuan wisatawan baik dari Amerika sendiri maupun dari mancanegara yang dibawa melalui beberapa kapal pesiar, untuk melihat pemandangan ini. Tentunya selama musim summer saja, yang berlangsung kurang lebih selama empat bulan.
Selain Glacier bay, Alaska juga memiliki tempat-tempat wisata lain, seperti wisata melihat habitat ikan paus yang terpelihara dengan sangat baik, kayaking, rafting, dll.

Satu hal yang sangat saya kagumi adalah, kepedulian penuh pemerintah Amerika dalam memelihara alam yang dimiliki nya. Banyak peraturan ketat mengenai lingkungan alam yang dikeluarkan dan berlaku untuk semua orang, sehingga alam tetap terjaga bersih dan terpelihara kelestariannya. Dan para turis pun menjadi betah dan tidak bosan-bosan untuk suatu saat datang kembali ke sana.

Tempat-tempat di Alaska yang biasa didatangi kapal pesiar adalah Ketchikan, Sitka, Juneau, Seward dan Skagway. Dari tempat-tempat itu, kecuali Sitka dan Seward, kita juga bisa menemui produk-produk makanan asal Indonesia, seperti mie instant indomie, saus sambal abc, cap jempol ( cuman cap jempol kaki ngga ada…), sambal bajak, rokok gudang garam, dll. Dan produk makanan itu menjadi tujuan utama crew asal Indonesia maupun negara asia lainnya, seperti philipine. Bahkan crew bule pun banyak yang suka makanan produk Indonesia (hebat yah produk Indonesia!).
Terus…kok crew itu malah cari makanan sih, bukan liat-liat pemandangan?. Buat crew bosen kali ya! tiap minggu bolak-balik ke situ-situ juga…

Bekerja dengan Holland America Line sangat unik, karena kebanyakan crew yang ada di kapal berasal dari Indonesia. Dua departemen besar, Housekeeping dan FB ( dining room ), semua dari Indonesia. Sebagian lainnya dari Pilipina, Amerika, Inggris, Australia, dan beberapa negara Eropa lainnya. Dan terahir India mulai masuk.
Di perusahaan kapal pesiar lain, crew masih bercampur juga namun tidak ada yang mayoritas dari satu negara.
Sehari-hari kita bisa mendengar bahasa kita sendiri, bahkan sampai bahasa daerah, baik di crew maupun passanger area, walaupun sebenarnya tidak diperbolehkan berbahasa lain selain bahasa inggris untuk berkomunikasi. Namun karena udah “bawaan orok” yah…susah dihindari. Jadi sepertinya kita berada di negara sendiri.
Aku join pertama kali dengan Holland America Line February 8, 1992, di kapal Ms. Westerdam ( old one ) – Sekarang kapalnya udah ngga ada, di jual ke perusahaan lain. Saat itu perasaan seneng banget, maklum baru pertama kali dalam hidup bisa pergi keluar negeri.
Kerjaan pertama, yah biasa jadi prajurit dulu. Jadi houseman, angkat ini itu, bersihin ini itu, disuruh sana sini. Tapi emang ngga kaget sih, kerjaan di hotel darat juga sama,
Bulan-bulan berikutnya diangkat dikit jadi sweeper ( wahhh….), terus bulan berikutnya lagi jadi bellboy. Nah bellboy di kapal beda dengan di darat. Di kapal cuma nganterin surat-surat antar departemen. Yang dibawanya ringan, kertas2 doang. Cuman jalan bolak-baliknya ama naek turunnya, lumayan buat latihan otot kaki. Kemudian setelah bellboy jadi night steward, dan kemudian naek pangkat jadi cabin steward, ngurusin sepuluh sampai lima belas kamar. Nah, jadi cabin steward baru kerasa banget enaknya bekerja di kapal pesiar. Duitnya lumayan, dan gampang lagi. Apalagi kalau bahasa inggris kita baik dan punya banyak bahan cerita atau joke untuk menghibur passenger, mereka ngga segan-segan meninggalkan tip yang lumayan di ahir cruise. Kecuali emang tamunya `medit` banget….he…..
Kontrak kedua dan tahun-tahun berikutnya aku jalani seperti biasa. Di darat tiga atau empat bulan, berangkat lagi. Pernah juga sepuluh bulan bahkan setahun di darat baru berangkat lagi.
Pelaut pasti tahu, delapan bulan atau setahun didarat……empat bulan lima bulan aja udah…..lieur..
Tahun ke sepuluh kontrak, aku mulai merasakan kejenuhan bekerja di kapal pesiar. Jenuh karena rutinitas pekerjannya, lingkungannya, suasananya, dll, dll.
Karena peraturan?. Yah…mungkin di setiap perusahaan sama, semakin besar dan berkembang, semakin berat pekerjaannya, semakin ketat peraturannya. Walau kadang dirasakan aneh dan berlebihan, peraturan baru yang di kotak katik. Tapi begitulah bekerja dengan orang lain, living under pressure.
Tahun 2008 lalu adalah kontrak aku yang ke sebelas, dan empat bulan baru berjalan , aku mengajukan pengunduran diri berhenti bekerja dari perusahaan Holland America Line.
Om ganteng emang udah ngga betah…..

Sekilas tentang Titanic
- Titanic dibuat ahir maret 1908 oleh Harland & Wolff ship building company, Belfast, Ireland, dan selesai sepenuhnya dalam waktu tiga tahun, dengan total beaya 7.500.000 dollar US atau sama dengan 400.000.000 dollar saat ini. Titanic di klaim sebagai kapal anti tenggelam karena memiliki enam belas kompartemen sekat-sekat pintu yang kuat ( watertight doors ) untuk menahan air bah agar tidak menyebar keseluruh ruangan kapal bila terjadi kecelakaan. Selain itu Titanic juga di anggap sebagai hasil karya manusia paling sempurna dalam dunia pelayaran hususnya kapal pesiar ( Thomas Andrews, Chief Designer of Titanic ).
- Panjang 268 meter ( 882 feet ) dan berat lebih dari 46.000 ton, Titanic dapat menampung lebih dari dua ribu penumpang.
- April 10 1912 adalah perjalanannya yang pertama ( maiden voyage ) dari Southampton, England menuju New York, Amerika, dengan membawa 2.228 orang ( penumpang dan crew ).
- April 14 1912 menjelang tengah malam, Titanic menabrak bongkahan es raksasa dan merobek bagian bawah lambung kapal, dan kemudian tenggelam dalam waktu kurang dari tiga jam setelahnya ( April 15 1912 ).
- Korban selamat 705 orang, dari 2.228 penumpang dan crew ( jumlah ini bervariasi ).

Bekerja di luar negeri ataupun kapal pesiar memang banyak di idamkan orang. Selain menjanjikan penghasilannya, bekerja di kapal pesiar sangat menyenangkan karena bisa sambil jalan2 di luar negeri tanpa harus mengeluarkan beaya banyak seperti kalau sengaja menjadi turis. Tapi ops tunggu dulu, menyenangkan di sini bukan berarti bekerjanya juga menyenangkan, tetapi menyenangkan di luar jam kerja. BRIDGE
The bridge is the control center of the entire ship. The steering wheel and navigational equipment is located here and the Captain will spend most of his time nearby.

CARDINAL POINTS
The four main points on a compass for heading, North, South, East, and West.

COMPANION WAY
A specific stairway that leads from the deck to the area where passengers are held.

CREW BAR
Lounge where crew members can relax and the stringent dress code and rules are relaxed.

CREW CABIN
Housing for crew members. These quarters are normally very small and used only for sleeping. Officers are given separate cabins while crew shares space with other crew. Each area is assigned a steward to look after the health and safety of the crew.

CREW SHORE LEAVE
This is the specific time when crew members are allowed to leave the ship and go to port.

DECK DEPARTMENT
This is the section of staff that is directly responsible for maintaining the deck, navigation and engineering.

DRAFT
This is the distance between the water and the bilge area of a ships hull.

ENTERTAINMENT DEPARTMENT
Staff members that are directly responsible for the activities that the passengers will take part in while on board.

FORE AND AFT
Terms that refer to the front and rear of the ship.

FREEBOARD
This is the distance between the water line and the deck.

GANGWAY
This is the way that you leave and enter a ship. It has ropes for security. Leaving or entering the ship by any other means is against the law and is a punishable offense.

GALLEY
This term refers to the kitchen on the ship or food preparation area.

GUNWALE
Removable section below the deck. Originally used to allow cannons and weapons to be moved in and out.

LAMINEX
Laminated ID badge that serves as the passport for crew when they leave the ship at port.

MESS
Term that refers to the dining area for the crew and officers. It is generally separate from that of the passengers and not nearly as fancy.

MUSTER DRILL
This refers to the law requiring crew members to be at certain stations in the event of an emergency. The crew acts as crowd control and guides the passengers in the right direction to the mustering point during an emergency or drill.

POOPED
Means that a wave hits you from over the stern.

PORT AND STARBOARD
Refers to the left and right sides of the ship in that order.

SHIP'S COMPANY
A general term meaning all employees of the ship.

SLOPS
A store for the crew that offers everything from snacks to uniforms.

STATEROOM
This is the common term for a cabin in which a passenger stays.

TENDER
A small vessel that is used to transport people and necessary supplies to and from the ship when it is anchored.

THREE SHEETS TO THE WIND

Refers to a person that is intoxicated while on the ship.

WARDROOM
Recreation area for officers that is similar to the crew bar.

WILLIWAW
Refers to the strong gusts of wind that can occur at sea.v

This is the time I`ve been waiting for, going home after twelve months working on board the ship. Imagine...twelve months coy. So when the time comes to go home for vacation, it feels like...susah di ungkapkan dengan kata2 deh...........

Internet on board the ship is very helpful for crew. Since they are away from home, internet access is the best solution to communicate with their family at home in real time. By chatting for example, they can see their family face via webcam. That can make them feel so close, though they are away from home.
Moreover internet now can be accessed directly from crew cabin ( wireless ).
